In the centuries that followed, Val di Lima’s history followed that of the Republic of Lucca, even though the lives of the people of the mountains were undoubtedly harder, leading eventually to widespread migration away from and within the region around the turn of the 19th century.
The depopulation of the mountains reached such a high level that a serious loss of the region’s social, historical and artistic heritage became likely.
